Do you have old family photographs gathering dust in a box somewhere or maybe old photographs of your home or village. Even if these are badly faded or torn, digital techniques mean that these can be scanned and repaired. In many cases they will be as good as new and maintain your family history or whatever for years to come. You may wish to restore the photographs to include in a family album, or you may wish to turn them into a framed print. If significant sections of the photograph are missing, these can be repaired by copying from elsewhere in the photograph or else repainting or drawing. However please bear in mind that while sections of walls, doors, windows and other artifacts can be deduced from other parts of the photograph, if large sections of a face are missing it is impossible for me to know what the person looked like and therefore impossible to reasonably repair. That is, unless of course you have another photograph from which to copy. It is also possible to enlarge some photographs. Please bear in mind that while it is possible to enlarge and improve the general appearance, tonality and sharpness of many photographs, this will not be possible in all cases. Perhaps counter to what one might expect , older photographs are generally much better for a enlarging. Many Victorian and early 20th century photographs were made as direct contact prints from large glass negatives. The resultant prints therefore contain any an amazing amount of detail which can well withstand enlarging. The photograph from circa 1918 in my gallery of restored photographs is just such a photograph and has withstood enlarging from 3 x 2 up to 16 x 11 (approx A3) size. With suitable mounting the picture size for wall mounting would go up to 27 x 20.
